Really Burger King? This one’s too obvious for words!
It’s hard to tell what’s more offensive. The haute couture style of the cover photo, which presents the blindfolding of a woman as elegant and refined. Or the accompanying article, which uses the popularity of the book “Fifty Shades of Gray” — which Katie Roiphe describes as the “skinny-vanilla-latte version of sadomasochism” — to speculate that women are not comfortable with power and might even find it boring.
Claiming (with no evidence and only one anonymous source) that an immigrant woman working as a hotel maid is actually a “hooker” is sexist, racist and classist, to say the least. Implicit in this accusation is that a prostitute cannot be raped, or that any claim she makes of being raped should not be taken seriously.
This campaign is a striking example of what it means to sexually exploit, objectify and commodify women. That it incorporates the identity of a troubled young woman celebrity makes it even sadder.
The scene taps into a hatred of women that still exists in our society — a revulsion toward women with power and a desire to punish them for making men feel weak.
Calvin Klein touts its advertising campaigns as “ground-breaking” — but they’re really the same old shtick again and again. Fashion designers love to show women splayed out on the ground, possibly unconscious, possibly being violated, maybe even dead.
Teaching kids that objectifying women and invading their privacy is fun — thanks Burger King!
Women are constantly judged and rated on their physical assets and sex appeal, and the Huffington Post really doesn’t need to be in the business of encouraging this practice.
