Women deserve a safe space to do their jobs. Before the end of this tournament, TV commentators, social media influencers, and all those who profit from women’s sports need to step up and show they care about women athletes and their fans alike.
Gender-based violence, at its core, is about power and control, said Bear Atwood, vice president of the National Organization for Women. With domestic violence specifically, “intimate relationships are the place where there’s the most access for a person to exercise power and control.”
For many women, this September seems to have been a turning point, explains Ms. Nunes. “The fact September saw so many women leave the workforce shows the difficulty many are facing balancing the shift in caregiving arrangements as their children go back to school,” she says.
“When women are doing the same work as men, there should be no pay gap at all, said Christian F. Nunes, the national president of the National Organization for Women. “The cost of rent, cost of living—life costs the same—and so we should not be creating more hardship on women because of their gender,” Nunes said.
“Women remain vulnerable to homelessness because of gender based violence, gender wage gaps, and employment protections such as paid sick leave, family paid leave, and affordable and accessible childcare,” said Christian F. Nunes, president of the National Organization for Women.
