Statement by National NOW President Christian F. Nunes
Donald Trump was found guilty on all 34 counts in New York—but the rule of law remains under attack. Trump’s response to the verdict was to continue his politics of attack, grievance, and dangerous lies.
No one is above the law—Donald Trump should know that by now. But we know from the fundraising Trump is already doing following his conviction that Trump has nothing but contempt for the law, for law enforcement and for democracy.
Donald Trump’s blatant disregard for the law and the most basic principles of democracy endangers our legal system but also creates a devastating risk to women’s rights and lives.
Trump’s presidency was marked by a series of actions that undermined women’s rights. From appointing Supreme Court justices’ intent on dismantling Roe v. Wade to rolling back protections against gender-based violence and workplace discrimination, his agenda has been clear from the beginning.
His deceit and violation of the law have been clear from the start.
NOW demands that Donald Trump be held accountable for his crimes, and that these guilty verdicts not be his last. That means the Supreme Court must rule without further delay to deny Trump immunity and clear the way for his next federal trial in DC before the election.
And outside the courtroom, women will be fighting to defeat the man they know is a serial predator who is dangerous to women.
We must demand accountability, not just for the sake of justice, but to safeguard the rights of every woman. Our future, our rights, and our dignity depend on it.
