NOW Summer 2024 Internships

The National Organization for Women is the largest grassroots organization of feminist activists in the United States. NOW has hundreds of thousands of contributing supporters and members in chapters in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. Since ​its​ founding in 1966, NOW’s purpose is to take action through intersectional grassroots activism to promote feminist ideals, lead societal change, eliminate discrimination, and achieve and protect the equal rights of all women and girls in all aspects of social, political, and economic life.

Each semester NOW interns participate in a wide range of activities that provide them with the tools and knowledge to become activist leaders, such as:

  • Frequent opportunities to organize and attend Congressional and U.S. Supreme Court hearings, press conferences, demonstrations, and rallies
  • Writing blog posts about current feminist and social justice issues
  • Attending NOW 101’s: workshops with staff focusing on feminist issues and professional development
  • Lobbying members of Congress to support key legislation
  • Engaging with NOW’s grassroots members

Interns will work with one of the following four teams below.

Duties:
President's Office: The President’s Office intern will learn firsthand how a grassroots activist organization works by working directly with NOW’s President’s Office. In this role, the intern will:
  • Attend meetings relating to NOW’s strategic planning, policies, and initiatives
  • Assist in planning rallies, conferences, and any other NOW events
  • Help implement RUN NOW efforts
  • Play an integral role in the internship vetting, interviewing, and hiring process
  • Take initiative on NOW Feminist Public Square endeavors
  • Facilitate membership engagement activities
PAC (Political Action Committee): The PAC intern will learn firsthand how a grassroots activist organization works by working directly with NOW’s Political Director. In this role, the intern will:
  • Attend meetings relating to NOW’s strategic planning, policies, and initiatives
  • Assist in planning rallies, conferences, and any other NOW events
  • Research candidates’ records on women’s rights issues while processing and tracking endorsement requests
  • Attend PAC-related meetings (usually on Saturdays)
  • Create postings for PAC social media pages
  • Facilitate the RUN NOW training program
Government Relations:  The Government Relations intern assists the Government Relations Director in extensive research and writing tasks relating to legislation, issues, and NOW actions. The intern will also attend coalition meetings, Congressional briefings, and hearings, and report back to staff. While keeping track of current legislation and news stories, the intern will also:
  • Conduct daily research on a variety of women’s issues, and write memos or briefs on various legislation and events that pertain to NOW
  • Write informational blog posts that educate the online community on NOW’s positions on a variety of issues, including: women’s reproductive rights, economic justice, racial justice, and constitutional equality
Digital Media: The Digital Media intern is responsible for assisting with all digital/social media related material. The intern will support the digital team in: crafting content, sharing weekly content focused on the news and NOW’s core issues, researching core issue content and historical events, and engaging in activist campaigns (i.e. Twitterstorms). Additional Responsibilities:
  • Assist in the creation of NOW-branded social media graphics using Canva
  • Support creating content for TikToks and Social Media Toolkits for ongoing campaigns
Accounting & Membership:  The Accounting and Membership Intern is responsible for supporting the Senior Accounting Manager and Membership Manager in all primary financial and membership processes. This intern will have an opportunity to learn and gain first-hand experience from the accounting team, as well as prepare financial reports and assist with reconciling accounts. The intern will also be involved in membership relations and partnership support. An ideal Accounting and Membership Intern should have an understanding and interest in grassroots campaigns and/or nonprofit development. Additional responsibilities:
  • Reconcile credit card statements
  • Organize check requests as needed
  • Attend meetings relating to NOW's Direct Mail and Digital Campaign
  • Work with the Membership team to facilitate check processing
  • Maintain expense reporting
  • Write thank you notes/emails to members
  • Provide general data entry and management of financials
  • Facilitate mailing inquiries regarding Nixies
Development: The Development intern is responsible for supporting the Development Manager in all primary fundraising processes. The intern will have an opportunity to learn and gain first-hand experience from the development team, gain exposure to donor stewardship, general fundraising, partnership support, and other duties as needed:
  • Work with the Development team to assist in strategic fundraising efforts through researching fundraising best practices, editing development materials, and assisting in campaign implementation
  • Support donor relations by assisting donor inquiries that include but aren’t limited to processing donations, acknowledgment letters, and updating contact records in the donor database
  • Attend meetings relating to NOW's Direct Mail and Digital Campaign
  •  Outstanding customer service skills, proficient written and oral skills, excellent problem-solving skills, willingness to learn
  • Knowledge of donor database particularly Every Action, knowledge of fundraising practices, past experience in fundraising activities
  • The ideal candidate is pursuing a bachelor’s or master’s degree in finance, liberal arts, or nonprofit management; interested in nonprofit management particularly fundraising
Chapters: The Chapters Intern will work closely with the Chapters Manager while gaining exposure to chapter operations and partnership support. An ideal Chapters Intern should have an understanding of and interest in grassroots campaigns, membership organizations, and nonprofit development. Additional Responsibilities:
  • Facilitate the NOW membership process via EveryAction database
  • Develop and update National NOW resources for chapter leaders and members
  • Fulfill chapters' orders and requests for signs and T supplies
  • Assist with chapter inquiries and other requests
  • Attend and bring ideas to meetings relating to NOW’s strategic planning for chapter engagement
  • Reach out to and maintain ongoing communication with NOW’s high school clubs and Campus Action Networks

Qualifications:
Prospective interns should be hard-working, enthusiastic, and flexible individuals who possess or seek a working knowledge of women's issues and feminist organizing. Interns should also be committed to continuing to struggle for equality and justice once they leave the internship program and return to their communities.

Salary: NOW pays a monthly allowance of $700 to offset interns’ travel and meal expenses associated with the internship. 20-24 hours per week is preferred. A minimum commitment of 10 weeks is required.
