When we discuss domestic violence, we most commonly tend to think about physical violence and sometimes, even mental or emotional abuse. Financial abuse and the lack of economic security are often neglected as very real consequences that survivors of domestic violence face.

Voter Suppression Targets Women, Students and People of Color (Issue Advisory, Part Two)

Following up on Part One we continue with additional information about what’s happening around the country that would depress voter turnout for the upcoming mid-term election. Of particular concern are tactics that would hinder electing feminist candidates for public office. We provide information on voting requirements in specific states and resources for activists who plan to help build the turnout of the Rising American Electorate – single women, persons of color and youth – for the November 4 general election.

FDA Moves Toward More Women in Research Trials

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently issued guidelines suggesting that more women, as well as greater racial, ethnic and age diversity, be included in research trials by companies submitting drug and device applications for review and approval. Unfortunately, the agency stopped short of requiring that companies have greater diversity in their study populations and to study the drug’s effects in those sub-populations.

Women Need Higher Minimum and Tipped Wage Rates

Women are disproportionately represented in the number of minimum wage workers. According to the National Women’s Law Center, nearly two-thirds of all minimum wage workers and nearly three-fourths of tipped minimum wage workers are women. Many of these women are employed in industries that are traditionally coded as “women’s work” and have traditionally been underpaid: child and elder care, housekeeping and food service.
