Happy Women’s Equality Day! We Are Inching Towards Equality

As we celebrate Women’s Equality Day, August 26, it seems like a good time to take stock. Predictably, we find a mixed record of modest advances towards equality and the stubbornly persistent inequalities. Here’s a quick rundown, starting with the important advances.

Democratic Party Platform is Most Progressive Ever; GOP Platform Nutty and Dangerous

The 2016 Democratic Platform, cited as the most progressive in the party’s history, was released in draft form on July 1 and will be voted on at the Democratic National Convention, July 25 – 28, in Philadelphia. The platform signals a moment of optimism and hope for the future in an election season marked by pervasive and blatant attacks against women, people of color, immigrants, Muslims and a slew of other groups targeted by the Republican Party. The Democratic Platform contains provisions that — if achieved — would result in large and long-awaited victories for feminists.

The Supreme Court’s non-decision decision in Zubik v. Burwell

The Supreme Court’s announcement that it will not rule on Zubik v. Burwell, the challenge to women’s access to birth control under the Affordable Care Act, is meant to avoid a 4-to-4 deadlock by sending the issue back to lower courts. It would have been far better if the Court had simply recognized fundamental constitutional principles and human rights.
