The National Organization for Women (NOW) has long fought for the rights of women throughout the United States, seeking justice for those that have been victimized or discriminated against. We believe that both of these situations have occurred in the Marissa Alexander case.
The National Organization for Women is proud of the work Montana NOW has undertaken to remove Judge G. Todd Baugh from the bench by filing an official complaint with the Montana Judicial Standards Commission. Baugh has come under intense scrutiny after sentencing a middle-aged teacher to only 30 days in jail for the rape of his 14 year old student, Cherice Moralez; Moralez later committed suicide.
In the U.S. and around the globe, women continue to be targets of sexual and domestic violence. Women are discriminated against in the workplace, and disproportionately suffer from poverty, less access to health care, less access to a livable wage, and barriers to higher education.
The Pentagon released chilling data this week that concludes there were an estimated 26,000 cases of sexual assault in the military last year, up from 19,000 in 2010. But only a small fraction of those assaults were reported — 3,374 in 2012 compared with 3,192 in 2011.
The degradation of women and girls is ubiquitous in our society. The term ‘rape culture’ is used to describe the casual debasement we all experience and witness every day. In fact, it has become such a part of our lives that it is often invisible.
