The latest Social Security trustees report projects that the system has a surplus of $2.7 trillion and revenue sufficient to pay all benefits through 2033. Those bent on dismantling and/or privatizing the system will try to twist these facts, but don’t be fooled Social Security is financially sound, and it’s even possible to improve benefits to meet the realities of today’s families.
Today, the Older Women’s Economic Security Task Force (OWES), part of the National Council of Women’s Organizations (NCWO), delivered a letter to members of Congress, calling on Congress to consider three pieces of legislation that would assure Social Security solvency for the next 75 years by lifting the cap on payroll tax contributions — a move that an overwhelming majority of the public has said they support, according to recent polls.

The debt ceiling agreement deals a serious blow to women’s economic security. If approved, it will impose $1 trillion in cuts to family planning clinics, food stamps, college tuition assistance, child care and other programs that disproportionately serve and employ women. The second part of the deal is likely to include cuts to Medicare, Medicaid and possibly Social Security.
NOW is concerned that President Obama is about to agree to a deficit reduction package that disproportionately harms women — without even bothering to consult with women leaders in Congress.
