Contraception is Prevention: the Affordable Care Act’s Preventive Care Mandate

Under the Affordable Care Act (ACA), certain preventive health services and screenings are covered without cost-sharing, including birth control. Women looking to obtain contraceptive methods can now access the full range of 20 FDA-approved prescription contraceptives and counseling without co-payments. These methods include the birth control patch, pills, ring, shot, cervical cap, contraceptive implant, diaphragm, intrauterine devices (IUDs), emergency contraception (EC), and permanent or surgical contraception methods.

Why I’m Excited About the Future of Feminism

Two and a half weeks ago, I was thrilled to open the annual conference of the National Organization for Women in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Albuquerque felt like the perfect place to meet up with activists and map out action plans to move the feminist agenda forward. Just a year ago, the women of Albuquerque formed an emergency coalition, Respect ABQ Women, to fight against a dangerous municipal anti-abortion ballot measure.

My Saturday at a Women’s Health Clinic

The Supreme Court’s job is to do extensive research and fully consider all options before making a decision. Somehow, though, I don’t see Scalia and Thomas taking a morning off to volunteer as escorts at an abortion clinic — so I did it for them. Last Saturday I worked for a few hours with a friend who escorts regularly at the Planned Parenthood clinic in Silver Spring.
