Roger Goodell’s response to the crisis of domestic violence has been inadequate and incompetent from the start. Team owners need to ask themselves if they really want to start the next season with the same failed leadership. The NFL will remain under a cloud of doubt and mistrust unless Roger Goodell steps down.

Besides demonstrating a woeful lack of understanding about sexual assault and women’s reproductive health needs, the 20-week ban was justified by a tissue of lies. The victim is an afterthought in this “new” policy — as she was in the old policy. Once again, Roger Goodell’s focus is on window dressing rather than effective, systemic change. NOW continues to call Goodell’s behavior shameful, unacceptable and impossible to defend. Roger Goodell must stop scrambling to save his own career, and resign without delay.

NOW is appalled by the Staten Island grand jury’s decision not to issue an indictment in the death of Eric Garner. This is a grave miscarriage of justice which must not stand. As demonstrations and protests are conducted throughout the city, NOW calls on police and authorities to exercise restraint and refrain from engaging in violence.
