NOW is appalled by the Staten Island grand jury’s decision not to issue an indictment in the death of Eric Garner. This is a grave miscarriage of justice which must not stand. As demonstrations and protests are conducted throughout the city, NOW calls on police and authorities to exercise restraint and refrain from engaging in violence.

This Black Friday, and every day, NOW stands in solidarity with the Walmart Strikers. Walmart has an obligation to better its practices as the largest employer in the United States. NOW calls on the Walton family to respond the demands to pay workers $15/hour and provide consistent schedules.

Goodell’s Failed Leadership Strikes Again

NOW has been saying all along that the NFL doesn’t have a Ray Rice problem, it has a violence against women problem. An independent judge has called Goodell’s leadership an “admitted failure” and NOW could not agree more. NOW continues to call for Goodell’s resignation and for his successor to conduct a top-to-bottom, comprehensive, independent investigation into the NFL’s response to domestic violence incidents.

NOW deplores the fact that our justice system has utterly failed Michael Brown’s family and community. Even worse is the spectacle of the authorities’ militarized response to peaceful demonstrations, a response that is all too similar to the inhumane and racist tactics used in the Deep South against civil rights protesters in the 50s and 60s.

The crisis in Ferguson reveals a racial divide in the U.S. that far too many would rather ignore. We cannot ignore it any more.
