As we celebrate the 91st anniversary of the 19th amendment to the U.S. Constitution this week, which guaranteed women the right to vote, it is now more important than ever to mobilize women voters. It is time to end the countless attacks by the right-wing in Congress and in state legislatures across the country on women’s health and economic rights.
When women aren’t called upon to discuss the realities of our lives, we are left with men discussing the contents of our medicine cabinets as if they were “culture wars” or “assaults on religious freedom.”
. Not only did I feel the disparities that come with being a young adult new to the workforce, but I also experienced the disparities of being a woman in my reproductive years. Finding a plan that would provide similar benefits and at a comparable cost of what many of my male friends were paying, proved to be impossible.
Three years to the day since the murder of abortion provider and women’s health activist Dr. George Tiller, irrational anti-abortion attacks continue. Today it is extremists in Congress seizing on sex-selection abortions overseas to bash U.S. women and their doctors.
In addition, hearing President Obama stand behind this condescending, disempowering overreach of young women (and all women) with a nod to the feelings of parents doesn’t feel any better. Reproductive justice includes the fundamental right to self-determination.
