The selection of Harriet Tubman, Union spy, anti-slavery activist and leader of the Underground Railroad risking her life to escort slaves to freedom in Canada, for the face of the $20 bill was right on the money. The decision was announced by Treasury Secretary Jacob “Jack” Lew in April that Tubman would replace Andrew Jackson (known for his racist views and forced dislocation of Native Americans resulting in many deaths along the notorious Trail of Tears). Unfortunately, Jackson will remain on the back of the $20 bill, but some have pointed out that the Tubman-Jackson depiction on the same denomination will offer a “teachable moment.” We can support that. The twenty dollar bill is set for a re-design (including measures to foil counterfeiters) and issuance by 2030.
NOW Protests at Polish Embassy – NOW activists joined a rally organized by Catholics for Choice (CFC) on May 1st at the Polish Embassy in Washington, D.C. to protest this further restriction on abortion that could harm millions of Polish women and their doctors.
Woman on the $10 Bill – Mark your calendars, folks. In 2020, to celebrate the 100th anniversary of women’s suffrage in the United States, a woman (gasp!) will be featured on the ten dollar bill.
Even though documentary film maker and Academy Award winner Michael Moore said after he finished his last film, Capitalism, A Love Story (2009), that he was through with making movies – he apparently didn’t mean it. And it is a good thing for us. Where to Invade Next, is the tongue-in-cheek title of this funny and ironic documentary which makes the case for empowering women and bringing back to the U.S. our original ideas which have helped Europeans flourish. The film opens nationwide on February 12.
