NOW Urges Democratic Leadership to Name Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney Ranking Member of Oversight Committee

Congresswoman Maloney is the second-ranking Democrat on the committee after Committee Chairman Rep. Ed Towns (D-N.Y.), who is giving up his post, and has given his support to Maloney. NOW, with a coalition of women’s groups, has signed on to a letter of support for Congresswoman Maloney, strongly urging the Democratic leadership to honor seniority and appoint Maloney as the next Ranking Member of the Oversight and Government Reform Committee.

Good News and Bad News for Women in Deficit Commission Vote

The only good news coming out of the National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform’s final meeting today was that the co-chairs failed to muster 14 ‘yes’ votes for their misguided proposal, so it will not be presented to the lame-duck Congress for immediate action. This result was due in part to the hard work of NOW members, Social Security advocates and many others whose calls temporarily shut down the congressional switchboard on Tuesday.
