On International Women’s Day, NOW Calls for End to the “War on Women”

Women have made incredible strides in the 100 years since the first International Women’s Day, but the challenges ahead of us are extraordinary. The individual atrocities and indignities committed against women every day will not stop until the larger war against women is ended and full equality is guaranteed.

NOW Urges Democratic Leadership to Name Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney Ranking Member of Oversight Committee

Congresswoman Maloney is the second-ranking Democrat on the committee after Committee Chairman Rep. Ed Towns (D-N.Y.), who is giving up his post, and has given his support to Maloney. NOW, with a coalition of women’s groups, has signed on to a letter of support for Congresswoman Maloney, strongly urging the Democratic leadership to honor seniority and appoint Maloney as the next Ranking Member of the Oversight and Government Reform Committee.

Drafted in 1979, The United Nations Convention on the Elimination of all forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) predates UN Security Council Resolution 1325, the landmark international human rights law drafted in 2000. CEDAW also works towards sustainable peace.
