NOW and other women’s organizations have done a wonderful job spreading awareness of the absurdity that is Hobby Lobby and Conestoga Woods’ Supreme Court case, but too-often we overlook a simple fact: birth control is about sex.
The U.S. Supreme Court on Wednesday heard arguments in McCullen v. Coakley (Docket No. 12-1168) challenging a 2007 Massachusetts law that makes it a crime for speakers to enter or remain on a public way or sidewalk within 35 feet of an entrance, exit, or driveway of a reproductive health care facility.
The National Organization for Women is elated for the many same-sex couples whose loving, committed relationships will now be recognized in law a result of today’s Supreme Court rulings on the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) and California’s Proposition 8.
Racism and discrimination still exist in this country and in our voting laws — we’ve seen dramatic efforts in many states to limit voting access. Politicians have tried passing restrictive voter ID laws, cutting back early-voting hours, eliminating same-day voter registration, and aggressive purging of voter rolls in recent elections.
NOW will continue to work with our allies to legislatively overrule Vance and Nassar to correct what Justice Ginsburg called ‘this court’s wayward interpretations of Title VII.’ We will also continue to fight for policies that foster racial diversity in higher education — without which communities of color will continue to face unjust barriers in employment and beyond.
