No More Than a Religious Mask for Bigotry

There are some beliefs, no matter how sincerely held, that should simply not be respected by any government. A “belief” that targets and endangers a specific demographic group that has historically experienced discrimination is no more than a religious mask for bigotry. Just as we reject the use of religion to justify racial and homophobic bigotry, the same is true for gender bigotry as well.

NOW Condemns Grand Jury’s Failure to Indict Police Officer Daniel Pantaleo, Calls for Thorough Investigation of Racial Profiling and Police Brutality in New York City

NOW is appalled by the Staten Island grand jury’s decision not to issue an indictment in the death of Eric Garner. This is a grave miscarriage of justice which must not stand. As demonstrations and protests are conducted throughout the city, NOW calls on police and authorities to exercise restraint and refrain from engaging in violence.
