The musical artist Kesha’s lawsuit against her producer, “Dr. Luke” Gottwald, reveals just how hard it is for women to prevail against their abusers in court. A New York judge has denied Kesha’s motion to release her from a recording contract that obligates her to work with a man she says repeatedly sexually, physically, verbally and emotionally abused her.
There are some beliefs, no matter how sincerely held, that should simply not be respected by any government. A “belief” that targets and endangers a specific demographic group that has historically experienced discrimination is no more than a religious mask for bigotry. Just as we reject the use of religion to justify racial and homophobic bigotry, the same is true for gender bigotry as well.
In a signing ceremony at Rosie the Riveter State Park near San Francisco, California Governor Jerry Brown signed into law today the strongest pay equity protection in the U.S. With the stroke of a pen, Gov. Brown smashed one of the biggest barriers to equal pay for work of equal value.
