It’s Time to #BeBoldEndHyde

Today marks the 40th year of the Hyde Amendment, which blocks countless women from accessing the abortion care they need. The National Organization for Women (NOW) is proud to partner with the All Above All coalition in calling on lawmakers to #BeBoldEndHyde.

The Hyde Amendment prohibits the use of federal funds to pay for abortion care. This effectively bans the procedure for countless individuals–notably women enrolled in Medicaid. Worse still, low-income women, young women, and women of color are hit hardest by the restriction.

The constitutional right to an abortion is no right at all if care is not accessible and affordable. The Hyde Amendment perpetuates existing systems of inequality, and prevents women from making their own medical decisions.

Forty years is enough; we must put an end to this pointless restriction on reproductive health care. NOW demands that Congress pass the Equal Access to Abortion Coverage in Health Insurance (EACH Woman) Act, which would put an end to the Hyde Amendment once and for all.
