THE ISSUE:

Congress will vote Thursday afternoon on a three-year extension of Affordable Care Act (ACA) premium subsidies that make health insurance more affordable for millions of people across the United States. Without an extension of the ACA subsidies, 1 in 4 people said they plan to or have already dropped their health insurance because they can’t afford the new premiums. That’s nearly 6 million Americans and their families who previously bought insurance through the ACA that are being put into an impossible situation by Republicans in Congress.

WHY IT MATTERS:

ACA subsidies lower monthly health insurance costs, helping people access preventive care, prescriptions, maternity care, and mental health services. Without an extension, premiums have risen sharply, putting coverage out of reach for 1 in 4 families and increasing the number of uninsured people nationwide.

Americans should not have to choose between feeding their families, paying their mortgage, or having affordable access to healthcare. After the attacks on affordability and healthcare put in place by last year’s HB1 passage, these premium increases are impoverishing everyday Americans. It is Congress’s responsibility to ease their burden, not give billionaires unnecessary tax breaks.

STATUS:

The subsidies expired at the end of 2025. Unless Congress acts, 1 in 4 American families may lose their health insurance due to skyrocketing premiums. It is critical for constituents to contact their representatives now and urge them to protect affordable health care access for all Americans. The vote will happen in the House on Thursday, January 8 at 4:45pm. If it passes the House, it will then move to the Senate for a vote.

WHAT YOU CAN DO NOW:

IT IS VERY IMPORTANT FOR YOU TO CALL YOUR REPRESENTATIVE NOW.

The Capitol switchboard number is 202-224-3121; a list of representatives appears here: https://www.house.gov/representatives . You can also go to the representatives’ websites and enter a message or obtain their in-state office phone number and call to deliver your message.

If the House vote passes, it’s equally important to call again to your Senators and urge them to vote YES as well.

Here is a short script you can use for your calls:

“Hello, my name is [Name], and I’m a constituent from [City/ZIP Code].

I’m calling to urge Representative/Senator [Last Name] to support extending the ACA premium subsidies. These subsidies help people afford health coverage and avoid higher premiums. Access to healthcare is a human right, and if you do not act, thousands of your constituents will be left uninsured.

Please vote to protect affordable health care for constituents like me. Thank you for your time.”

If your representatives are Republicans, you can also use this resource from Indivisible to contact your representatives.

Thank you for everything that you do for NOW. Make your voice heard today!
