Urge Your Senator to Take Up H.R. 1 and Vote YES on For the People Act

BACKGROUND 

THE ISSUE:  H.R. 1 (For the People Act is a comprehensive democracy reform package that aims to create more equal power to create a fairer government through the elections process. It addresses issues including voting rights, campaign finance reform, and ethics for members of Congress.  

WHY IT MATTERS: Voting rights have been under attack, with hurdles like gerrymandering and voter ID laws disproportionately placed in the way to systematically suppress votes from Black communities and communities of color. This bill would help restore the imbalance and empower all Americans to have a say in government, not just the most privileged. Without these reforms, we may see even more voter suppression efforts and face serious obstacles in passing progressive measures. 

THE STATUS:  On March 3, 2021 H.R. 1 passed the House of Representatives on a near party line vote. Now, the For The People Act must be introduced, scheduled and voted on in the split Senate, where it would likely need 60 votes to overcome a Republican filibuster.  

TAKE ACTION 

WHAT CAN I DO?  Make sure this critical bill does not end up in the legislative graveyard by contacting your Senator, voicing your support and urging them to take up and vote YES on H.R.1.   

HOW DO I DO IT?  Call the Capitol Switchboard at 202-224-3121 and be connected to your Senator’s office. Here is also a directory of current Senators, where you can find their websites and ways to contact them online.  

WHAT DO I SAY?  I am calling to urge Senator [NAME] to vote in favor of H.R.1, the For the People Act. This is a critical step needed to reform our democracy, end voter suppression efforts and ensure that voting rights are protected for ALL constituents of [STATE].

  • Dear [@Senator’s Social Media Handle], listen to the voters who turned out in record numbers in 2020 to demand their democracy back. Vote to take up #HR1 and pass the #ForThePeopleAct!
