‘Family Care’ Benefit Could Fix Retiree Pay Gap

NOW President Terry O’Neill spoke with Women’s eNews correspondent Sharon Johnson about proposed Social Security changes, outlined in NOW’s collaborative May report “Breaking the Social Securty Glass Ceiling”, that would seek retirement credits for family caregivers to help close the gender gap in retirement benefits: “Women want reforms like those in our report and will reject politicians who call for austerity, a code word for cutting safety net programs like Social Security, which women rely on disproportionately. America can’t afford not to provide fair and adequate benefits because so many women are financially vulnerable.”
