Though women only make up 15 percent of the military, 47 percent of military sexual assault victims are female. Over one-third of female veterans have survived at least two assaults. Shockingly, by the military’s own estimate, of the 26,000 sexual assaults committed in 2012, only 3,374 were reported and 302 were actually prosecuted. We must do all we can to root out sexual assault, and the rape culture that enables it, from the U.S. military.
