Because the SAVE Act is really the STOP Act — It Stops Women from Voting

The so-called SAVE Act just passed the United States House of Representatives, and it could strip millions of American women of their ability to vote.

This isn’t election security. It’s voter suppression. The SAVE America is not a voter id bill — if you show up with regular ID you won’t be allowed to vote. Specific requirements will vary by state. Call this hotline if you have questions (866-OUR-VOTE).

According to the Brennan Center, there is a higher likelihood of being struck by lightning than voter impersonation fraud occurring in our elections!

Why Women Need to Know About This

The SAVE Act would require American women to present documents like a passport or birth certificate that matches their current legal name in order to register to vote.

That may sound simple, but for millions of women, it isn’t. Women who have changed their names due to marriage, divorce, or other life events often do not have documentation that matches their current legal name. As a result, experts warn that as many as 69 million women could face barriers to registering to vote.

That means millions of women could be turned away from the ballot box. And women aren’t the only ones affected.

Who Else Could Be Impacted

  • Women
  • People of color
  • Young voters
  • Naturalized citizens and immigrants
  • Military families
  • Americans without easy access to documentation

When barriers are placed between people and the ballot box, democracy suffers.

The Bigger Picture

The SAVE Act is part of a broader effort to undermine confidence in elections and push false claims of voter fraud. These tactics threaten the very foundation of American democracy. This bill doesn’t protect our elections. It puts voting out of reach for millions of American citizens. That’s why advocates are calling it what it really is: The SAVE Act is the STOP Act. Because it stops women from voting. The bill now heads to the United States Senate. And the Senate must reject it.

Why This Matters

We know what happens when more women vote.

When women participate fully in our democracy, we see stronger advocacy for:

  • Paid parental leave
  • Affordable childcare
  • Access to health care
  • Protections against violence toward women
  • Economic policies that support families

But when fewer women vote, those priorities are pushed aside. Instead, policies that favor wealthy elites and corporations take precedence. That’s why efforts to restrict voting so often target women.
