Statement by National NOW President Christian F. Nunes
WASHINGTON, D.C. — National NOW President Christian F. Nunes issued the following statement on the 2nd anniversary of the Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization (Dobbs) decision that overturned Roe v. Wade (Roe) and the Women’s March strike today:
“Roe was the federal umbrella that protected a woman’s basic right to bodily autonomy. However, the Supreme Court destroyed it with the Dobbs decision. Two years later, women have fewer rights than we did fifty years ago.
Yet, women now make up most of the college-educated workforce, and ten million businesses in the U.S. are owned by women. In the past few years, women-owned businesses created 2.3 million new jobs. And extremists continue to lie, slander, and smear anything and everything to deny women their fundamental right to make their own decisions about their bodies. Let’s be real: without women, society would grind to a halt.
That is why NOW will join the Women’s March and others to strike throughout the United States today, to show that our contributions will not be taken for granted and that we will stand up to the continued attacks on our reproductive freedom.”
