We Believe Survivors: Your Words Are Enough

Statement about Sean “Diddy” Combs by National NOW President Christian F. Nunes

WASHINGTON, DC – It’s heartbreaking to listen to the accounts of survivors of Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs’ alleged crimes of sexual violence, rape and abuse.  They deserve justice, and Sean Combs must be held fully accountable.

As new accusations and individuals come forward, we also see how damaged we are as a society by an insidious culture of toxic masculinity that has gone unchallenged too long.

We are challenging this systemic failure right now.

It can never be permissible to side with perpetrators, profit off their celebrity, and join in their blame and shame of survivors.

Every corporation, social media platform, media business, sports franchise, music and entertainment institution must choose their side today.

Are they allies to their customers and the public? Are they working to keep all survivors safe and supporting decisive action by legislatures and the courts?

Or are they continuing to stand by in silence—and greed?

Sean Combs used his fame and power to abuse, attack and exploit his victims and corrupt others into helping him escape accountability. There are far too many like Sean Combs, who use advantages based on income, race, ability or social status to evade justice.

It is time to let survivors know that their words are enough. Sean Combs needs to be held fully accountable for his actions—and so must every other abuser.
