“The SAVE Doesn’t SAVE—It Oppresses Everyone”

Statement by NOW President Christian F. Nunes

Washington D.C. — The House-passed SAVE Act is based on falsehoods, built on lies, and meant not to preserve democracy but further weaken it.  By requiring states to obtain proof of citizenship in person from people who are registering to vote it will disenfranchise millions, disproportionately impacting women, military members, and people of color.  In fact, as many as 69 million women who change their names after marriage will no longer be able to use their birth certificates as I.D. under the SAVE Act.

The lies about safeguarding the right to vote won’t distract us from seeing the truth—which is that illegal voting by noncitizens, and voter fraud in general, is extremely rare.  The SAVE Act only saves the trickery used by politicians who want to pick and choose their voters.

The Senate must stand up to this full-out attack on our democracy by voting with a strong bipartisan majority to stop the SAVE Act.
