Statement by National NOW President Christian F. Nunes
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Christian F. Nunes, National NOW President, issued the following statement in response to today’s U.S. Supreme Court decision in former President Donald Trump’s presidential immunity claim:
“The Supreme Court failed democracy today. In ruling that former President Trump is entitled to some level of immunity from prosecution—but ducking the decision on what constitutes ‘official’ conduct—Chief Justice John Roberts has written the legacy of the Roberts’ Court.
This Supreme Court will go down in history as the AWOL SCOTUS that walked away from its’ precious responsibility to settle urgent constitutional questions—while they still matter.
Ducking its responsibility to decide whether former President Trump can get away with criminal acts, Chief Justice Roberts said, ‘…in addressing that question today, unlike the political branches and the public at large, we cannot afford to fixate exclusively, or even primarily, on present exigencies,’ or in other words, the election.
But that is why we have—and need—an independent, corruption-free Supreme Court, especially when times are urgent, and the clock is ticking.
Sending this case back to lower courts means more delay for former President Trump and less chance he will be held accountable in a courtroom before November. This case now goes back to U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan, who can still move expeditiously and protect democracy by settling these questions and moving to trial.
The Roberts’ Court showed us where they stand when it comes to siding with democracy over autocracy—but this fight isn’t over.
