NOW Won’t Let Congress Label Us “A Terrorist Organization” – Congress must vote NO on HR 9495

Statement by National NOW President Christian F. Nunes

WASHINGTON, DC—H.R. 9495 is a threat to free speech and a danger to democracy.

It’s another piece of performance by the extremists in Congress, who want to give Donald Trump—or any president—the dictatorial power to shut down and silence critics, punish enemies and mobilize the government against membership organizations like NOW.

The House must defeat this raw abuse of power.   Every representative must decide if they really want to give Donald Trump’s Treasury Secretary the unilateral power under this legislation to designate nonprofits like NOW a “terrorist supporting organization” without requiring any evidence or basis for the decision.

H.R. 9495 is part and parcel of Donald Trump’s “I will be your retribution” promise and it will turn the tax code into an enemies list for punishing political opponents, stripping them of their tax-exempt status and shutting down their work.

The House must not give a head start to Donald Trump’s vindictive, extremist agenda.  The House must vote against H.R. 9495.
