Nancy Mace Must Be Heard

Statement by National NOW President Christian F. Nunes

WASHINGTON–It took a great deal of personal courage for Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC) to take to the House floor and speak for nearly an hour about the physical abuse and predatory sexual behavior of her ex-fiancée and three other men.

She was 100% right when she said, “When you incapacitate women, it’s against the law.  When you sexually assault women, it’s called rape.  If you film women naked, without their permission and without their consent, it’s called voyeurism, and it makes you a peeping tom, and it is illegal.”

NOW is grateful that Rep. Mace found a safe place to talk about these assaults on the floor of the U.S. Congress, but for many women, that safe place is hard, if not impossible, to find.  Rep. Mace’s political views have nothing to do with her truth, and as a non-partisan advocacy organization working to advance women’s rights and protect women’s lives, NOW supports Rep. Mace’s truth and salutes her courage.

All women deserve the same consideration, the same access to justice, and the same platform for speaking out.  Nancy Mace must be heard—and so must all women.
