Statement by National NOW President Christian F. Nunes
WASHINGTON, D.C.–For the second day in a row, the Supreme Court took a wrecking ball to decades of protected rights and precedent.
Today’s 6-3 ruling by the Court’s conservative supermajority stated a website designer could refuse to provide services for same-sex weddings was pure bigotry, cloaked in a flimsy First Amendment disguise.
In her dissent, Justice Sonia Sotomayor wrote, “Today, the Court, for the first time in its history, grants a business open to the public a constitutional right to refuse to serve members of a protected class.” She went on to cite the “backlash to the movement for liberty and equality for gender and sexual minorities”.
NOW members know all about that backlash. And we know how to push back against it. The law of the land must never be, “open for discrimination.” This fight isn’t over.
