Gov. Newsom Fails to Protect Women– Women Need Safeguards Against Unchecked Big Tech

Statement by National NOW President Christian F. Nunes

WASHINGTON, D.C. —Christian F. Nunes, National NOW President, issued the following statement on California Gov. Gavin Newsom’s veto of SB 1047, the Safe and Secure Innovation for Frontier Artificial Intelligence Models Act

“We’ve heard these false arguments before—putting Big Tech on the legal hook for the harm they cause is labeled ‘government overreach,’ that will ‘inhibit innovation’ and create ‘expensive bureaucracy.’

This is not the sentiment we expect to hear from progressive leaders like Gavin Newsom.

SB 1047 is needed because unregulated AI will continue to have devastating consequences and will disproportionately fall on vulnerable groups, including women.

Congress had an opportunity to regulate social media in the early days but they could not grasp how it worked or envision the impact it would have on our democracy, privacy, and very importantly how it could be used as a weapon of hate against women, people of color, LGBTQIA+ people, and more.

With this veto, Gov. Gavin Newsom is siding with unregulated Big Tech, manipulating consumers with new ways to influence the information they take in every day.

This is not the action of a progressive leader, and he has failed his constituents.”
