Washington, D.C. — Girls today are facing tougher challenges than ever before. Which is why EveryGirl World and the National Organization for Women are putting together the first-ever Girls State of the Union, on October 21, 2021, at 7:30 pm ET, a soon-to-be historic event that puts girls in charge of their own future. This event is organized and driven by girls and for girls, featuring voices from around the country.
In our post-pandemic culture, anxiety, depression, and suicide rates of young girls are on the rise, and there is a national call to address the mental health crisis that is exacerbated by the state of accelerated changes in our national culture. Suicide is the second leading cause of death in kids and teens ages 10 to 19 in the U.S. “Suicide attempts among girls ages 12 to 17 went up 50.6% between February 21 and March 20 of 2021”. It’s time to stop and pay attention to what teen girls need to say.
The Girls State Of The Union is an open online forum that will address the challenges girls are facing head-on, prioritizing the topics that young women care about the most. What is unique about our approach is that rather than having adults define the agenda, we are creating a space to center the voices of leaders to tell us what they care most about. Through collaborative conversations and voting, this first forum will identify the most pressing issues facing teen girls.
Which will result in the attendees creating an agenda that they collectively wish to address. This will be the first in a series of Girls State Of The Union events where we will continue to define specific goals and develop proactive solutions, working in partnership with other national women and girls organizations.
This event is a listening ground for adult leaders, educators, and policymakers to hear the poignant voices of change of a diverse group of young women from across the U.S. We will have an interactive panel of young women, who are leaders and making impactful social change in their communities. Tackling topics like climate justice, racial inequality, violence against women, economic reform, physical health, and more. These conversations about actions and solutions will take us to the White House in 2022 where we will make sure to educate policymakers on what matters most to girls!
