Donald Trump’s Wrecking Ball on Government Funding Impacts Women and the Most Vulnerable

WASHINGTON — Donald Trump wants to change our nation’s laws with drastic cuts in programs that serve as lifelines to millions of women and children—including many of his supporters.

His funding freeze on nearly all federal grants and loans, along with his 52-page order for a spending review to weed out “D.E.I., woke gender ideology and the Green New Deal” in all federal agencies is intensely political, clearly dangerous, and is already being challenged in court—but we can’t wait for justice.  We need it now.

These actions—along with others taken in the first week of the new Administration—are designed to score points with his supporters, but what they are not hearing is how deeply these cuts will be felt everywhere—especially in red states.

Seven of the 10 states most dependent on federal funding are Republican leaning, according to data from MoneyGeek. This hammer will come down on Democrats, Republicans and Independents alike.  They have a need—but this Administration doesn’t care.

Only hours after these actions, we’re already seeing:

More than forty years of universally accepted federal priorities are now being targeted for elimination—including education, anti-poverty initiatives, housing assistance, disaster relief, Head Start, domestic violence prevention, research on cures for childhood cancer, food assistance, suicide hotlines and many other essential programs.

“Every one of these dollars is stretched to help as many people as possible, and there’s no replacement for this vital assistance,” says National NOW President Christian F. Nunes. “Badly needed spending can’t be replaced by political games—lives are at stake!”

What they’re doing is so dangerous and contradicts the core of our shared values of “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness” for all—not just a privileged few.

“We believe in an America where programs exist that can lift people out of crisis and help them achieve equity,” says Nunes. “While these actions play out in the courts and in Washington, we must take this message to the people—hands off programs that work!”
