Appeals Court Ruling Is Still an Attack on Medication Abortion

Statement by National NOW President Christian F. Nunes

WASHINGTON–A ruling from the most conservative federal appeals court in the U.S. has allowed the abortion pill mifepristone to remain available, but with severe restrictions that continue the attacks being waged on women’s bodily autonomy.

This dangerous overreach by ultra-conservative judges is based not on science, medicine, or legal principles.  It is only about raw political power—and contempt for women’s health and bodily autonomy.

While medication abortion has not been completely banned today, it is still under threat.  Too much is at stake for this decision to be allowed to stand.  The Justice Department must file an appeal, and ultimately, the Supreme Court must decisively reject this dangerous ruling.
