The proposed 2012 Republican budget would wipe out critical social programs crafted over many decades to protect the most vulnerable and safeguard the middle-class. The White House and the Democratic leadership must stand up for simple justice.
Today the Supreme Court will hear arguments in Wal-Mart v. Dukes — the largest employment class-action suit in U.S. history. The company’s challenge seeks to halt the case, which represents more than 1.5 million women, before it even gets to trial.
Today Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker signed into law the disastrous bill that undermines union workers’ rights. Despite this enormous injustice, it’s heartening to note the many activists who stood up for the people. Wisconsin NOW strongly opposed Walker’s efforts and called attention to the fact that the bill targets unions comprised largely of women.
Women have made incredible strides in the 100 years since the first International Women’s Day, but the challenges ahead of us are extraordinary. The individual atrocities and indignities committed against women every day will not stop until the larger war against women is ended and full equality is guaranteed.
President Terry O’Neill says: “In his State of the Union, President Obama proclaimed this to be ‘our generation’s Sputnik moment.’ ” As the president reaches for the stars, NOW will be working to ensure that the women of this nation are lifted up as well.
