Today, we rejoice with same-sex couples in Vermont who can have their relationships legally recognized as the new law legalizing same-sex marriage, passed by the Vermont legislature on April 7, takes effect.
We applaud the historic vote by the Vermont legislature and congratulate the activists whose work made this victory possible. Vermont joins Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Iowa in legalizing equal marriage.
I am proud that NOW has long recognized marriage as a fundamental constitutional right and NOW activists are committed to continuing our efforts until the promise of equality for all loving couples in every state becomes a reality.
Which state will be next in recognizing that marriage is a basic civil right that should be extended to all its citizens?
