Action Alert: Tell Your Senator – Vote NO on ANY SAVE ACT

Here we are again. The Trump administration is getting desperate.

The House has attached the SAVE Act as a provision to the National Defense Authorization Act, a must-pass defense spending bill, that the administration wants to hold hostage until it includes the voter suppression they need to win the midterm elections.

The SAVE Act would require all eligible Americans to provide proof of citizenship by presenting a passport or birth certificate when registering to vote. This is IN ADDITION to state voter ID laws already in place.

Here’s the problem: More than half of Americans don’t have a passport. Millions also lack easy access to birth certificates— especially married women whose legal names no longer match their birth certificates. With 8 in 10 married women changing their surname, many would face major hurdles just to vote in the next U.S. election.

The consequences would be devastating.

The cost of obtaining these documents is an unofficial poll tax on the poor, people of color, young people, married women, and LGBTQIA+ voters. 

The SAVE Act would also upend online voter registration in 42 states, making it impossible for Americans to register to vote by mail, and STOP voter registration drives nationwide.

Take action: Tell your Senators to vote NO on ANY bill that has the SAVE Act attached– including the NDAA. Our right to vote is at risk! Legislative trickery should not be used to sneak suppression into federal law.
