ACTION ALERT: Call Your Representative: The House Budget is Cruel, Dangerous, and Must Be Defeated
The Issue
The House of Representatives will vote this week on what Donald Trump calls his “big, beautiful bill” that will set his tax and immigration agenda in stone. But the truth is that this is a big, ugly bill that is a direct attack on women’s health and the health and safety of millions of Americans.
According to CBO, the House GOP reconciliation bill would cut Medicaid by at least $600 billion, the largest cut in the program’s history. Nearly 45% of all U.S. children—34 million in total—are at risk under proposed cuts to Medicaid and SNAP, which would be the largest in U.S. history.
Between 9.7 million and 14.4 million people in the expansion population would be at risk of losing Medicaid under a provision that takes coverage away from people who don’t meet a harsh work requirement.
Work requirements are rooted in stereotypes based on race, gender, disability status, and class, not in reality. Low-income adults, even when working, are often employed as day laborers or in other ways that don’t produce the right forms, or they lack the formal education to deal with complicated reporting rules. The result? The people most in need of assistance are unfairly cut off.
The GOP budget will throw millions off their health insurance and bring on an economic pandemic that will hurt all of us, while big tax giveaways to the wealthy preserve luxury lifestyles for the very rich.
There’s even a provision that takes specific aim at Planned Parenthood, preventing Medicaid from funding health providers that also offer abortion care. Unless we stop this bill, hospitals will close, women won’t get the health care they need, and premiums will rise unchecked.
