NOW Celebrates “Herstory” as First Woman Speaker Nancy Pelosi is Sworn In

With the U.S. Capitol serving as a backdrop for this historic moment, NOW leaders and feminist activists will celebrate the most powerful woman in the United States, Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), with a gesture that says: Way to Go!.

On Jan. 4, Pelosi will be sworn in as the first woman Speaker of the House. In front of the Library of Congress, site of the Swearing In Brunch across from the Capitol, NOW will greet Pelosi with a giant congratulations card from supporters around the country. NOW has accumulated nearly 10,000 signatures, personal sentiments and well-wishes, and these messages will be posted on this huge card for Speaker Pelosi to see.

“This is a historic moment for women everywhere – Nancy Pelosi has broken through the marble ceiling,” said NOW President Kim Gandy. “With the House under Speaker Pelosi’s leadership, women are now more hopeful for a better future. NOW looks forward to working with Speaker Pelosi on legislation that will help empower women and families.”
