The Alabama IVF Ruling is the Latest Power Grab by Extremists to Restrict Women’s Independence to Determine Their Own Reproductive Freedom

Washington, D.C-– Christian F. Nunes, National President of the National Organization for Women (NOW) issued the following statement in response to the Alabama Supreme Court ruling that frozen embryos in test tubes should be considered children:

“This frightening ruling has chilled reproductive medicine in Alabama and, worse, may have empowered other states to follow suit. The Dobbs’ decision was just the tip of the iceberg. The extremists will not stop until they have absolute bodily power over women and their families.

This decision makes it clear that no matter your race, religion, ethnicity, political views, or zip code, extremists are coming after your bodily autonomy and the right to determine your own families’ path.

This is what extremists want for women in Alabama—and if they get their way this November, for all of us. The three Supreme Court Justices appointed by the previous president join an ultra-conservative majority that includes Clarence Thomas, who has made it clear he wants the Court to go after contraception, after repealing Roe. But we can change the courts, and change the face of politics, by turning out to vote in record numbers this fall.

The Alabama IVF ruling denies science and also denies women the ability to build their families.  The same extremists who are behind court cases like the one in Alabama won’t stop until they turn back the clock even farther. That is why this November, we must vote like our lives depend on it, because it does.”
