NOW Hails Supreme Court Ruling Upholding the Affordable Care Act

WASHINGTON, D.C. — NOW applauds the Supreme Court for today’s historic 7-2 ruling, rejecting the latest attempt by Republicans to end the Affordable Care Act (ACA).  For the third time, we told Republican politicians they cannot misinterpret the Constitution to advance their goal of taking health care away from millions of Americans.

NOW continues our efforts to protect women’s access to reproductive health care, including fighting to uphold the ACA, which requires insurers to pay for things like birth control, preventive care, and other essential benefits. NOW is working to ensure that lawmakers will stop their assault on the ACA and focus instead on increasing access to affordable health care, maintaining coverage for people with preexisting conditions, expanding Medicaid, and strengthening Medicare, among other provisions.

The Court’s decision in California v. Texas means that Congress will not have to take emergency action to shore up health care coverage as the nation builds back from the coronavirus pandemic.  Now, Congress must turn its attention to passing laws that further protect our health and economic security.

The Supreme Court has taken a decisive step towards securing the health care future of the American people.  Now, it’s Congress’ turn.
