FDA Decision Empowers Women to Control Their Reproductive Health

Statement by National NOW President Christian F. Nunes

WASHINGTON, D.C.– Following the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) approval of the first daily oral contraceptive for use in the United States without a prescription, National Now President Christian F. Nunes issued the following statement:

“When those seeking birth control pills can simply walk into a drug store and obtain oral contraception without a prescription, it empowers them to make their own healthcare decisions. Through this decision, the FDA removed the burden of time and costs associated with doctors’ appointments, time off from work, transportation, and other factors that limited access to oral contraception.

“At a time when women have seen their bodily autonomy stripped away and their ability to make their own medical decisions limited, this is a welcomed shift forward.”

Women, especially those living in rural areas, on reservations, and in poverty-impacted communities, will now have more control over their reproductive health.”
