Defense Authorization Bill Double Standard Sets Military Back

Statement by National NOW President Christian F. Nunes

WASHINGTON, D.C. — National Now President Christian F. Nunes issued the following statement in response to the House approving the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), which authorizes $886 billion for the national defense budget for 2024. This legislation specifically and purposely removes funding for travel reimbursement for service members seeking abortion care and gender-affirming care for transgender people, among other provisions.

“I wish the double standard in this legislation was shocking, but it’s not. Lawmakers are fine with studying erectile dysfunction and covering costs for Viagra but then slash the ability for service members to travel for an abortion or obtain other gender-affirming medical care.

Let’s be clear that these cuts are not about saving taxpayer money. This is blatant misogyny and transphobia that set the military back instead of creating an inclusive culture for troops rooted in the freedom they defend every day.”
