My series Mythmaker, (in the permanent collection of the NMWA in DC), is in reaction to Joseph Campbell’s protagonist in The Hero with A Thousand Faces. My artwork in this series depicts the Heroine finding and following her independent, unique path in life. Inbound is the keystone of the Mythmaker series. In this drawing the heroine is returning back to earth from her soul searching journey, having found her own way and connection to the earth.

I always leaned towards feminism but when I had two daughters I truly found my feminist voice. No matter the heartache or toughness of the situation I look at my two girls and know I have to fight for them. I feel something behind the mothers eyes in Dorothea Lange’s original photograph. It feels as though, even weary and torn down, she will fight for her children. Each stitch that I made, I built up the same determination. You may be beat down but our children need us.

Andrea Huige

This piece reflects the creative and healing power of the feminine spirit. The triple moon represents my belief that women need to be valued in all life stages. I chose a uterus with a waterfall as the focal point because the uterus is more than a place for pregnancy. It is a place for inherent power and creativity. The willow tree is painted like stained glass because I believe that nature is a true church for the feminine spirit. The butterfly and echinacea flowers represent the ability to gain wisdom through change and healing. Finally, I used bold red in several places in the piece to represent the blood of life and is interconnected throughout the piece. My inspiration began by looking at a willow tree in my backyard (in front of a lake) and I began to wonder about the mysteries beyond the willow tree in a realm where women are valued, treasured, and celebrated.

My piece is a soulful interpretation of the power of women. We are strong, we are intelligent, we are all powerful. We take back our power that has been taken time and again and we stand with conviction. The Goddess is within us all. We will rise out the shadows and be ourselves. We CHOOSE our future and will not be defined by the fragile male ego that has held us down for far too long. We embrace who we are, not who others think WE ARE!

My feminism is like a soft whisper in my own ear. I don’t like to speak about it or to face it. I am so incredibly uncomfortable with the weight of the patriarchy on my back that I don’t even want to look at it in the face. My way of expressing feminism is through my art. Taking self-portraits to another level by incorporating the femininity that I am comfortable with through nudity. ‘Eve was Framed’ helped me open up about my shame about my own femininity and the role I play as a woman. I will not be everything I want to be because I am a woman, but the things I can be are so incredibly powerful. I can either ignore that or embrace it. The strongest weapon I have against the hatred towards woman in our society is my own nudity. The blatancy empowers me and strengthens me. The impulsion to look away from a woman proud of her nudity gives it more power. So here is ‘Eve was Framed’ in your window, impossible to look away from.

I am inspired by the story of Saint Barbara–locked in a tower she found ways to learn about the world beyond her confinement, found her faith and held to her conviction to the point of martyrdom. At the moment of her death her executioner was struck by lightning; she is now the patron saint of armorers, architects, anyone about to be struck by lightning and various faiths not recognized by the Catholic church. She inspires all women to stand by our convictions in the face of opposition.

“Shrouded” was created as a response to the pandemic, our changing freedoms and painful misguided society. In a lifetime, I have never felt so much loss and disillusionment in our democracy. Humanity is at its weakest NOW, when values have warped, ignoring the damage to the environment, women’s freedoms and the manipulation of justice. An expression of loss, isolation, is expressed through body language. The delicate nature of the construction and the wrapping of the shroud, symbolizes a thin skin or shroud that is easily penetrated so we can see past the surface as we experience emotion and loss. The gauze also serves as a drape that is often used in burial. Enshrouded in the mystery of all that it means to be here, now. What does it mean to be human in these times? What does it mean to be a woman in and era when so much that we have achieved has been taken away?

Expressing my fear and anger during the week leading up to SCOTUS overruling Roe v Wade. As a 58 year old queer woman, I’m increasingly aware of the ‘going backward’ trajectory of feminism in culture, art, and politics, specifically on my reproductive rights. I know of no similar law restricting a man’s right to his own bodily autonomy. It truly feels like a War on Women.
