Ensuring Transgender Students’ Safety and Dignity

NOW thanks the Obama Administration and the U.S. Department of Education, who acted courageously, appropriately and dramatically in issuing new guidance for school districts to ensure that transgender students have equal access to sex-segregated facilities such as restrooms and locker rooms.

Transgender Lobby Day gives a Voice to Trans Folks and Allies

Last fall in my hometown an agender teen named Sasha’s skirt was set on fire while they rode home on the bus. Victim of a cruel assault just because of their gender expression, Sasha suffered severe burns and was hospitalized. The bus Sasha was riding on, the 7, was the bus that I took to school every day, and Sasha went to the same high school as my older sister, who is lesbian.

Transgender Healthcare: Forgotten and Inaccessible

My close friend Shane recently began the transition process and described it to me as “overwhelming” and “difficult to achieve.” His parents, although entirely supportive of his transgender identity, could not help much financially with the transition. Without a job — and his parents unable to contribute — Shane wondered how he would pay for monthly prescriptions of hormones, blood work to monitor his health, and eventually surgery.
