Thomas E. Allen / ‘Doctor of choice’ was leader of social, artistic causes

An obituary in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette for Dr. Thomas E. Allen says: “Even before the Supreme Court’s Roe v. Wade decision in 1973 made abortion legal, Dr. Allen was a pioneer in establishing the therapeutic abortion clinic at Magee-Womens Hospital, where women could safely end pregnancies under the care of a doctor. In 1973, he helped secure the $50,000 Planned Parenthood grant that established Women’s Health Services here, for which he served as medical director from 1973 to 1994.”
