Young Feminists Call for Spring Summit

by Dee Dee Anderson
Intern/Volunteer Coordinator

Nearly two years ago NOW hosted its second young feminist conference, a summit on violence against women. The turnout was outstanding, double the estimated participation. As workshop rooms overflowed and young activists eagerly took notes, it was easy to see that a conference for young feminists, by young feminists, was needed.

In a conference call meeting with the officers, the NOW National Young Feminist Committee discussed a third young feminist conference and agreed to hold it in Washington, D.C., April 11-13. The committee will meet in mid-January to discuss workshop ideas, themes and possible speakers.

"One of our goals is to provide the opportunity for young women and men to gather, share their experiences and develop skills," said Inson Kim, committee co-chair. "Then they can go back to their communities and be leaders in the women's rights movement."

The committee agreed that the upcoming summit should focus on skills building, so that young feminists can organize campus and community task forces and regional young feminist conferences.

Activists will organize throughout the country for this event. Committee representatives will work in their regions with community and campus groups to bring delegations to the summit.
