Politicians are constantly interfering with women’s health decisions by placing strict barriers on access to abortion and birth control: a trend that will undoubtedly continue under the current administration. These restrictions disproportionately affect low income women, rural women, women of color, and the LGBTQIA+ community. NOW affirms that reproductive justice is an issue of life and death for women, not a mere matter of choice. Right now, of particular concern are: 1) the nomination of Neil Gorsuch to the Supreme Court, and 2) the effects of a repeal of the ACA on reproductive rights.
NOW’s Action Agenda:
- Lobby legislators to ensure they oppose any measure to repeal the ACA unless its replacement retains existing protections against pre-existing conditions, lifetime coverage caps, and gender-based discrimination, and adds improvements such as including a public option in states without sufficient market competition from private insurers.
- Lobby legislators to support improvements to affordable health care overall, for example with the EACH Woman Act.
- Lobby Senators to filibuster the confirmation of Neil Gorsuch and, should a filibuster fail, vote “no”.
