Under protest from LGBT rights activists, Target CEO Gregg Steinhafel apologized on Aug. 5 for donating $150,000 to a group that supports an anti-gay marriage, anti-quality candidate for governor in Minnesota. That same day, NOW had sent a letter to Steinhafel objecting not only to the company’s political donation, but also to his personal stance against an eating disorder treatment facility opening up in his community.
NOW’s president, Terry O’Neill, was not impressed by Mr. Steinhafel’s “I’m sorry you were offended” type of apology. “Last I checked, Mr. Steinhafel didn’t ask for the money back,” O’Neill said. “What good is an apology without any accompanying action? All that does is insult the intelligence of those he has hurt. Not to mention the fact that he has yet to address his callous objection to the eating disorder facility. His ‘not in my neighborhood’ attitude reeks of privilege and ignorance. Until I hear more, I’m still not shopping at Target.”
